Scent-free policy

Dance with Us Ottawa has announced a Scent-Free policy for their studio. I will have to consider this policy for Maitland Massage Therapy also. For most people, I think this already common sense, but there are people out there who still enjoy a variety of additional scents, perhaps not realizing their impact on people with more delicate immune systems.

Here is the policy they sent me this morning:

Due to the health concerns arising from exposure to scented products, Dance With Us Ottawa has instituted this policy to provide a scent-free environment for all students, employees and visitors.

The use of scented products will not be allowed within the studio at any time. Visit Canadian Health and Safety office for detailed information.

When scented products have been blamed for adversely affecting a person’s health, some or all of the following symptoms are reported:

  • headaches
  • dizziness, lightheadedness
  • nausea
  • fatigue
  • weakness
  • insomnia
  • malaise
  • confusion
  • loss of appetite
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • numbness
  • upper respiratory symptoms
  • shortness of breath
  • difficulty with concentration
  • skin irritation

Allergic and asthmatic patients, as well as those with other conditions, report that certain odours, even in the smallest amounts, can trigger an attack.

Thank you for your cooperation.”
